Hi, I’m Dean, a former decathlete. Back in my competing days, we relied on a bulky book filled with point tables to track our scores, a far cry from the convenience we need during a competition.
That’s why I built this website: to give athletes a points scoring calculator that works seamlessly on both desktop and mobile. It’s designed to provide exactly the information you need, quickly and clearly, helping you focus on what matters most – your performance.
Understanding the Decathlon Events
Event-by-Event Breakdown
Day 1
- 100m: A short sprint to test an athlete's top speed.
- Long Jump: Athletes sprint down a runway and leap into a sandpit for maximum distance. This event combines speed with explosive power.
- Shot Put: Athletes use a pushing motion to 'put' a heavy metal ball as far as possible.
- High Jump: Athletes jump over a high bar. The bar is raised after each successful jump to test their vertical leaping ability.
- 400m: A full lap around the track that tests both speed and endurance. It's known for being a tough end to the first day.
Day 2
- 110m Hurdles: A sprint over ten high hurdles. It requires speed, good coordination, and flexibility.
- Discus Throw: From inside a circle, athletes spin and throw a heavy disc as far as they can.
- Pole Vault: Athletes use a long, flexible pole to go over a high bar. This event requires a lot of skill and strength.
- Javelin Throw: Athletes throw a spear-like javelin for maximum distance. Power, timing, and good technique are key.
- 1500m: The last event of the decathlon. This middle-distance run is a final test of an athlete's endurance after two long days.
Scoring Insights
The scoring system rewards athletes who are good at every event, not just one or two. The scoring isn't straightforward because points are based on formulas. A small improvement in one event can be worth more points than a similar improvement in another.
For instance, shaving five seconds off your 1500m time gives you a different number of points than adding 20 centimetres to your long jump. This calculator uses the official World Athletics scoring formulas so you get accurate results. You can use it to see which events give you the biggest point boosts.
