    Event order

    The Throws Pentathlon Events

5 events, all on one day, in this order.

    Competition Day

    Events 1-5
    1. Hammer Throw

      Throw

A metal ball on a wire, thrown from a 2.135m circle after several turns. It opens the competition.

    2. Shot Put

      Throw

The shot is pushed from the shoulder inside a 2.135m circle. Leg drive and technique matter as much as strength.

    3. Discus Throw

      Throw

Thrown from a 2.5m circle after a spinning wind-up. Big points swings come from technique.

    4. Javelin Throw

      Throw

Thrown after a run-up. Timing and a fast arm count for more than strength alone.

    5. Weight Throw

      Throw

A heavy weight on a short handle, thrown with turns from the hammer circle. It closes the competition.

    How Throws Pentathlon Scoring Works

    Official tables

Points use the WMA formula A × (M − B)C for every throw, rounded down to a whole point.

    Points → performance

Type points and you get the slowest time, or shortest mark, that still scores them. Not every total can be hit exactly, so the calculator tells you what the nearest mark really scores.

    Masters & saving

Masters marks are converted to an open-age equivalent with the WMA 2023 age factors, then scored on the standard tables. Results save in your browser and can be shared with a link.

    Questions

    Throws Pentathlon Scoring FAQ

How are throws pentathlon points calculated?

Each of the 5 throws is scored on its own using the WMA throws pentathlon scoring tables, then the points are added together. Every throw uses the formula A x (M - B)^C, where M is the distance in metres. A, B and C are fixed for each event, and the result is rounded down to a whole point. For example, 55.74m in the hammer throw scores 800 points.

How much is 1,000 points worth in each throws pentathlon event?

Scoring 1,000 points in every event would give a total of 5,000. The marks needed for 1,000 points are: hammer throw 67.63m, shot put 18.40m, discus throw 56.17m, javelin throw 77.19m, weight throw 19.59m.

What is a good throws pentathlon score?

As a rough guide: New to the event, under 2,500. Solid club throwers, 2,500 to 3,300. National masters medal contenders, 3,300 to 4,000. International masters level, 4,000 and above. Standards vary by country, age and level of competition, so use these as a starting point.

What are the throws pentathlon events, and in what order?

All 5 events are held on one day, in this order: hammer throw, shot put, discus throw, javelin throw and weight throw.

Which scoring tables does the throws pentathlon use?

The calculator uses the World Masters Athletics (WMA) throws pentathlon tables. The shot put, discus and javelin use the same formulas as the World Athletics combined events tables, while the hammer and weight throw have their own WMA formulas.

How does masters age grading affect the score?

Masters athletes throw age-appropriate implements. Each mark is then converted to an open-age equivalent with the WMA 2023 age factors and scored on the standard tables, so athletes of different ages can be compared on the same points scale.
